Today we learned about George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. They learned some awesome facts, but one that was great for our class is that Dr. King wanted us all to be friends. After we finished our Scholastic News we did a Friendship Web activity. Students picked friends to write about and completed their activity page. Here are some pictures of the groups in action.

We have been studying our numbers 0 - 19 over the past couple weeks and will continue next week. Below are some images from some of our lessons. Be sure to work on these at home with your child. Please let me know if I can be of any help!!! Over the past couple weeks we have been studying the Underground Railroad with an emphasis on Harriet Tubman. Mrs. Amell and I decorated our room to give the class a better understanding of the events that took place during this time. With all of the inclement weather days and delays, we will continue this next week. Below are some photos of the room. Be sure to ask your child about what they have learned. Mrs. Amell had a wonderful idea of sharing our love on Valentine's Day by giving our staff a Valentine's Day craft. We had so much fun showing our appreciation for the BDQ staff. Thanks, Mrs. Amell for such a special activity! Over the past 5 weeks our class has learned about bears around the world. The bears we studied were: Sun Bear, Sloth Bear, Giant Panda, and Polar Bear. After 4 weeks of learning about our bears we spent a week working on a certain bear for a kindergarten presentation. Each of our 4 class countries were assigned a specific bear. Their job was to use their research (journals) to create a bear, its habitat, and its diet for a digital presentation piece they would share with the other kindergarten classes. Below are images from their week of working on their creations. I've also included links to the digital portion of their presentations. They did an amazing job!!! Thank you to one of our families for sharing their photo of them working at home on their Valentine's craft. Their family agreed to have this shown on our site. I'd love to see more photos, too!!!
It's finally here . . . the 100th day of school. We had an awesome day. All of our class wore capes with something showing 100, we had two 100 day experiments (Starburst 100 chews and Tootsie Roll Pops 100 licks), and we made our very own 100 Day Stew (referencing the book "Wolf's Chicken Stew). Below are a few pictures of our day. This week we are continuing our measurement lessons with some hands-on learning. We do math centers every week and some of our centers are on current topics, but I also like to bring in previous learning so we can practice and to provide enrichment for our students. This week we are using iPads to practice addition and subtraction skills. Students work with a partner to solve math problems. They share strategies with each other and earn points in the game Math Magic. A new center is called the Addition Machine. Students work in groups and are presented with an addition problem. They use the game to add in the correct number listed on each side of the math problem and pull the handle to see how many they have altogether. Our other two centers focus on measurement. Some of our fourth grade friends come down and read the problems to our friends and they use various manipulative to test weight, length, and height. It's been a great week. Below are some pictures of our friends in action with math. So today is Groundhog Day and we had a blast. We read a story about Groundhog Day, wrote our prediction about if we thought the groundhog saw its shadow, watched the news report online to see the results, and made a craft! Whew we were BUSY!!! Below are some picture of our groundhog craft. OH and the title said babies! Our Pre-K class at BDQ has a pet hamster named Lucy. Well little did Ms. P know that Lucy was carrying babies with her when she came to find a home at BDQ. Lucy had 10-12 babies and Ms. P was kind to share them with us. We'll be watching their life cycle over the next couple of weeks. Thanks, Ms. P. We have a picture of that below, too! |
