We had an AWESOME day today with technology. Our class went to the technology/computer lab as a whole class today and worked on math and reading. We also worked with our Bee Bots to help us learn/practice our sight words. The entire class did a FANTASTIC job. Since they showed respect for our technology and were so excited, we will now be using our Bee Bots at least twice a week. The pictures and videos below show our class in action.

We finished up our Polar Bear lessons by making a Polar Bear Lap Book. Take a look at the videos below with our friends (Carli, Aidan, and Allexis) explaining our books.
We are wrapping up our lessons on arctic animals by discovering the fascinating world of Polar Bears. They are beautiful and amazing animals. There was so much to learn. This week we partnered with Ms. Peterson again to do more centers. There was writing penguin facts, making polar bears, typing sight words and a blubber experiment. The blubber experiement was tons of fun and the students really got to experience the benefits of blubber for animals. We had our scientific Blubber Experiment recording sheets to document our findings. Below are pictures of some of our students. This week we were studying penguins to continue on our month of learning about winter, snow, and arctic animals. We saw a movie, had penguin crafts, went to the library to see Mrs. King for a great center opportunity, and learned great penguin facts. Our class partnered with our Kinder neighbors in Ms. Peterson's class to have more penguin centers. One of our centers was Penguin Measurements. We saw how tall Adelie and Emperor penguins were and measured to see if we were taller than these penguins. After measuring ourselves with a yard stick, we graphed our results. Check out the pictures below to see our results. This week we have been studying winter, snow and snowmen. To finish up our week we made our very own snowman. Since there is no snow here we used powdered doughnuts, pretzel sticks, icing and candy!!! Check out the pictures below to see our adventure into building "snowmen". And yes, we did eat them when we were done. :) Thanks to our local Partners In Education, I was able to apply for grant to fund a robotics program in our class. I was so excited when I found out I was one of the chosen recipients of this grant. Part of our robotics program is this amazing little robot call a Bee Bot. Today I wanted the students to spend time learning about the robots and just have time exploring how they work. It was so much fun and the students had a blast. Next week we will use the Bee Bots to retell the story of "Where the Wild Things Are". Last week we read the story and each table is working on four scenes to use in their own retelling of the story. After they are complete, they will program the Bee Bots to move from one scene to the next in the correct order as they retell the story. This is just the first part of our use of the Bee Bots and only the beginning of our robotics program. Check back soon to see what else we are doing with our robotics program. I really wanted our class to have a hands-on activity creating our numbers. We used these fantastic multi sensory number cards I found online (we will do this same activity over the next few weeks with our sight words). The class REALLY enjoyed this activity and were learning their numbers up to 10, too. Our class was approved to be a Smithsonian Classroom with ePals. Want to see what this means? Becoming a Smithsonian Classroom, means we , the teacher and students pledge to uphold the Smithsonian's mission, which is "the increase and diffusion of knowledge." By making this pledge, we are representing our country in the ePals Global Community. Being a Smithsonian Classroom allows us to be the first to know about and get involved in unique Smithsonian on ePals activities. We also are able to earn recognition from the Smithsonian for work we upload to ePals and can become "Smithsonian-Certified" in specific topics. Here we go friends, we are now on Twitter. We will be posting almost every day about weather, math, news, or books. We are even connecting with other classes around the US and world!!! Check us out on Twitter @wilsonskinders!!!
Let me start by wishing everyone a very happy New Year. I've really enjoyed my break at home with my own family and friends, but boy do I miss my school family. I can't wait to hear all about the super special gifts you each received. This week we will begin our next adventure . . . ROBOTICS!!! The Bee Bots will be making their way to our lessons THIS WEEK!!! Stay tuned for pictures and videos on how our Kindergarten class is on board with the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program by using robotics. I was fortunate enough to receive a fantastic grant that allowed me to purchase some of the Bee Bots equipment as well as some of Lego's WeDo robotics equipment. The Lego portion will come in a couple of months, but we will have tons of lessons using both programs. Be sure to ask your children about how they are using robotics. Now, before we went home for winter break four of our friends were working on inventions for the Invent It! Challenge. Below are their pictures with what they named their invention. I will be submitting these items this week. Judging takes place next week the Spark Labs. We may have a winner, but regardless of what the judges say I think each of our friends are winners and great inventors! |
