OH and the title said babies! Our Pre-K class at BDQ has a pet hamster named Lucy. Well little did Ms. P know that Lucy was carrying babies with her when she came to find a home at BDQ. Lucy had 10-12 babies and Ms. P was kind to share them with us. We'll be watching their life cycle over the next couple of weeks. Thanks, Ms. P. We have a picture of that below, too!
So today is Groundhog Day and we had a blast. We read a story about Groundhog Day, wrote our prediction about if we thought the groundhog saw its shadow, watched the news report online to see the results, and made a craft! Whew we were BUSY!!! Below are some picture of our groundhog craft. OH and the title said babies! Our Pre-K class at BDQ has a pet hamster named Lucy. It was a bittersweet afternoon. We wished Mrs. Purvis well on her adventure up to 1st grade but we were sad to see her go. WE LOVE YOU, MRS. PURVIS!!! I love teaching my kiddos about polar bears and this year was no exception. Our room has developed such a love for all things science so it was extra special to add a blubber experiment to our polar bear unit. Loved it!!! They made predictions on the blubber, conducted the experiment, and documented the results. My favorite part is the smiles on their faces when they don't really feel the water when their hand is in the "blubber glove." Below are some pictures of our testing. We are having so much fun learning all about measurements. We've learned math words like height, length, weight, short, tall, long, heavy, and light. Look how we worked in groups to share our learning. This week our school is participating in the Hour of Code. We are trying to encourage awareness and increase participation in this field of study. Our class is using the app "Kodable" as well as other programs offered on the site code.org. "Kodable" invites critical thinking skills by challenging students to use their positional word knowledge and mathematical skills to code a monster how to get out of a maze. The kids went BANANAS over this yesterday in a whole class lesson and experimented on their own today during centers. Our two other countries will participate in centers tomorrow using this app. I have also created accounts on the code.org site for each of our students. If you are interested in using this at home, please let me know and I'll send home their login information. Here are a few pics from our centers today!!! Would you like more information on the value of coding and computer science? Please visit this site for more information: code.org. Don't put a www. or http://www. in front. Just code.org. Over the past few weeks we have been learning all about shapes. Recently we had some investigations about 3D shapes. Below are pictures from our classroom 3D shape scavenger hunt and another lesson on making 3D shapes. We have some pretty amazing mathematicians in our room. During our weather unit in September and October we learned all about weather words, performed experiments, and learned about weather forecasting. As you know each of our tables represents a country present in our class or school so we wanted to extend our learning to see how weather can be different around the world but at the same time as us in New Bern, NC. Each morning our table communicators (we have a communicator to help their table, materials person to pass out materials, and a noise patrol to monitor their table's weather) investigate the weather in their country. They get their weather journal, grab an iPad, and scan a QR code that takes them to the current weather in their country. We then share the weather and compare conditions during our morning meeting and calendar each day. Below are a few pictures of class communicators preparing their journals. We had SO much fun creating our Mayflowers and then launching them for our families and community. It was so great that Mrs. Romans was able to get New Bern Sun Journal to come out and see our event. (Thanks, Mrs. Romans!!!) If you weren't able to attend or just want to watch again, our videos are below. It was an amazing day today. We are so thankful for all of our families and happy for those who were able to make it to our play. Enjoy the videos below of our special day!Below are some videos of what we're learning this week.
